This year, InstantCard became a member of 1% for the Planet, joining thousands of other companies, big and small, in making a powerful statement by committing to donate, every year, 1% of revenues to environmental causes. We will be providing you with regular updates on what actions we are taking to advance the noble cause of planetary health. Today, I’d like to mention two amazing organizations we have recently donated to that are doing terrific work in areas of great concern to us.
Oceana is headquartered near us in Washington D.C. and is focused on protecting the world’s oceans. For over 20 years, as one of the country’s leading ocean conservation organizations, they have focused on influencing specific policy decisions at the national level to preserve and restore the world’s oceans. Oceana seeks to make our oceans as rich, healthy, and abundant as they once were.
Oceans cover 71 percent of the globe, and they are as important to us as they are vast. Our oceans are home to most of the life on our planet and play a central role in the world’s natural systems, like regulating our climate and absorbing carbon dioxide. They provide livelihoods to countless fishermen and others around the world. They also feed hundreds of millions of people and have the capacity to provide a healthy seafood meal to a billion people, every day. Unfortunately, the oceans are in trouble — scientists report that the amount of fish caught from the oceans began declining — for the first time in recorded history — just a few decades ago. Fortunately, we know how to fix things. Science-based fishery management — which establishes science-based catch limits, reduces bycatch and protects habitat — is helping the oceans rebound and recover where it is established. Oceana is dedicated to advocating for science-based fishery management and restoring the world’s oceans.

The Environmental Defense Fund, or EDF, located in New York City, is a nonprofit environmental advocacy group. The group is known for its work on issues including global warming, ecosystem restoration, oceans, and human health, and advocates using sound science, economics and law to find environmental solutions that work. What we especially like about EDF is that science still guides everything they do.
EDF is today one of the leading national nonprofit organizations representing more than 3 million members and activists. In 2017, they celebrated 50 years of successfully promoting major initiatives to improve our planet’s health. EDF is currently an active participant in COP27 in Sharm-el-Sheik, Egypt, where global leaders are addressing the critical problem of climate change. EDF is working to solve the most critical environmental problems facing the planet: climate, oceans, ecosystems and health. Since these topics are intertwined, their solutions take a multidisciplinary approach. EDF is guided by science and economics to find practical and lasting solutions to the most serious environmental problems.
